DAV Movements |
- Swami Dayanand’s message was the message of the vedas. He proclaimed that the vedas are not the monopoly of the priests and India alone but for all mankind, irrespective of nationality, creed, caste or sex. He denounced foreign domination and untouchability and preached the abolition of the caste system. He defied with all his might the wrongs eating into the vitals of society.
- To perpetuate his memory and carry forward his mission, his devout followers, like Mahatma Hans Raj, Lala Lajpat ai and Pandit Guru at Vidyarthi established the D.A.V. College Trust and Management Society on the 31st January 1886. The main objective of the Society was imparting education, which should have its roots in the fundamental values of Indian culture and which will be liberalised to assimilate new elements of thought, science and technology suited to the changing modern needs. This marked the beginning of the Dayanand Anglo Vedic (D.A.V.) Movement. The inclusion of the word “Anglo” indicates the need for learning English, a modern language to give a new orientation to education for modernisation and up-to-date technology. The movement took practical shape with the establishment (on 1st June, 1886) of the D.A.V. High School, Lahore (Later College) with the total collection of Rs. 24868/-. It began with Lala (Later Mahatma) Hans Raj, aged 22, who having graduated the year before became the first Principal and took the solemn pledge to dedicate his life to the service of this institution without any remuneration whatsoever. The D.A.V. College Trust and Management Society is now the biggest non-government education organisation in India. It covers broadly the entire spectrum of educational activities in the country. The society runs more than 700 educational institutions which include:
